However, China’s latest census data shows its ethnic minority population has maintained a relatively high growth rate. The Uygur population grew at a compound annual growth rate of 1.67 percent from 2000 to 2020, although it is true that the birth rate has been declining in recent years. CGTN visited Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi to hear from the local youth on their opinion about having children in the future.
